Xylitol is an alternate form of sugar found naturally in birch tree bark, corncobs, raspberries and other natural sources. It has been used as a sugar substitute because it has 40% fewer calories than sugar but is equal in sweetness. Studies have shown that streptococcus mutans (s. mutans), the bacteria most responsible for tooth decay, is unable to metabolize xylitol, which means it is also unable to produce the acids which cause tooth decay. Additionally, the bacteria is inhibited from using other sugar sources. As a result, xylitol actually helps prevent cavities.
Xylitol is a compound found naturally in the body as a metabolic intermediate. Studies have shown that it is safe for human consumption and has been approved by the FDA. Dog owners should take special care because xylitol can’t be metabolized and is harmful to dogs. Xylitol has been available in the US for many years and can be found in chewing gum, mints, toothpaste, mouthwash and other products.
At Capitol Dental, we have a proven Anti-Cavity Action Plan (ACAP) which includes xylitol gum or mints along with an anti-bacterial rinse and high concentration fluoride toothpaste among other things. Please feel free to ask us about this ACAP protocol at your next visit.
